I spend a lot of time on the computer…as do many of you. Chances are if you are reading this, you too are looking for the end of the internet… it's out there somewhere.
So, I had a little discovery today. I tend to be a bit talked out by the time I leave work. I've been on the air yaking for 4 hrs… not to mention the talking with my lovely co-workers even during the commercial breaks. I don't exactly feel the need to be social the remainder of the day and I'm looking for ideas, information and things to talk about in the upcoming days. I'm on the computer.
Today, I had an afternoon meeting so I decided to be one of those computer guys at the coffee shop. I realized something important. Taking your office work out to a more social environment is a great way to grow your network and reaquaint yourself with some old friends. I don't like to get interrupted any more than the next guy, but I also didn't have anything solid I had to finish, just general work. I found it entertaining, stimulating and intersting to set up a micro office where I could observe people and run into a few friends. I don't have any regular place that I go, especially since I got a city wide wi-fi card. It's nice to broaden your horizons, your input and I think this will enhance creativity. It's also a nice way to grow your network. Hit different coffee shops and restaurants. I'm a sucker for the dive local coffee shop. Thing is, for every person I ran into that I knew, most of them were there with someone I didn't know, again a chance to grow your network.
It's interesting how your thoughts change when your surroundings change, the converstations and stimuli change. I was having something different to eat for a change, such a creature of habit, listening to different music and bumping into different people.
Why are we so locked into our offices, at home or at work? It's kind of sad…really.
